About
the Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles began playing pro-football in
1933 when a syndicate headed by the late Bert Bell and
Lud Wray purchased the former Frankford Yellowjackets
franchise for $2,500. At the time, the country was
struggling to recover from the Great Depression.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt introduced his "New
Deal" program through the National Recovery
Administration, which used the Eagle as its symbol.
Since Bell hoped his franchise was headed for a
"new deal" of its own, he picked
"Eagles" as the team name. In 1941, the
Philadelphia Eagles swapped home cities with the
Pittsburgh Steelers, and Alexis Thompson became the new
Eagles owner. Then, in 1943, the Philadelphia and
Pittsburgh franchises combined for one season because
World War II created a manpower shortage. The team was
called both the Phil-Pitts and the Steagle and not well
recieved. Greasy
Neale of the Eagles and Walt Kiesling of the Steelers
were co-coaches and the team finished 5-4-1. For more
information on the Philadelphia Eagles, visit the
official Philadelphia
Eagles Website you can bet it is no gamble that Eagles fans will have a
lot to cheer about this coming season. |
